about

Yerushalayim Shel Zahav was composed by Naomi Shemer in 1967 for an Israeli song festival competition. It failed to win any prizes. With the subsequent recapture of Jerusalem by Israeli troops a few months later, the song became an unofficial national anthem expressing the Jewish people’s love affair with our eternal capital. This arrangement’s harmony, form and solo section were completely rewritten and adaptedwhile incorporating an introductory bass line lifted from John Coltrane’s Equinox.
